TRIBE

A new social media platform

As part of my Exeter College Software development course my final project was to develop a new social media platform to combat an ageing Facebook.

I took on the exciting challenge of designing a brand-new social media app along side fellow team mates. Firstly, I took a deep dive into the world of users, understanding their needs and behaviours. Then crafted user flows and wireframes to ensure a seamless experience of the key functions. Lastly, I focused on defining the look and feel for the user interface, as well as establishing the app’s unique brand personality.

Functions

What key functions does the app have?

Full on experience
Tribe aims to provide a fully immersive experience to its users by leveraging VR technology. This ‘hero’ function will help Tribe to stand out from other social media platforms.

I want it now!
Live streaming has huge potential not only for personal users but for organisers of live events. This feature would enable a broader audience to enjoy sold-out concerts and offers a potential revenue stream for the Tribe platform.

5 second ‘chunker’
Edit videos into engaging 5-second chunks, with a tool to track user engagement which would help to identify popular clips.

It’s all about me
We would encourage users to customize their avatars to reflect their personalities, with editing, recolouring, and accessory options.

Crafting your own social space
Tribe empowers users to personalise their communicate in the language of their “tribe.” This enables  people to create an immersive community space.

Complex emotion
Tribe provides a wide range of emojis, allowing users to express more emotions, fostering more meaningful interactions.

Problem statement

Discovering the opportunity

During the discovery phase, although no formal research was conducted, I engaged with several target users and collaborated with data analyst’s students. This allowed our team to identify and explore the problem at hand. The data analysts provided valuable insights into emerging trends in social media, as well as usage statistics and demographic information.

User persona

Designing for 'Sean'

Based on the insights gathered from studying emerging trends and conversations with target users, I developed a composite user persona named ‘Sean.’ This persona helped me understand the users’ needs, experiences, behaviours, and goals. By considering Sean’s perspective, I could ask the right questions and then design in line with the users’ experiences.

Userflows and wireframes

Turning the insights into a design

To capture my initial ideas and explore different concepts, I started by sketching them on pen and paper. Once I identified a few promising ideas, I created basic low-fidelity screens and shared them with the team. Their feedback allowed for quick iterations and formed the basis for the high-fidelity mock-up.

High-fidelity mockups

Bringing the designs alive

Using the simple wireframe as a starting point, I focused on transforming it into an engaging design. Typography, images, and colors were utilized to create the desired visual appeal. I tested the mock-up with a small group of target users, gathering invaluable feedback that was incorporated into the design.

Branding

Creating a cohesive visual identity

The logo captures the vibrant essence of the audience and their dynamic interests. To ensure versatility, I crafted simplified versions suitable for both single-color applications and a distinctive app icon. The logo’s unique shape resonates throughout the user interface (UI) across icon shapes and profile images, establishing a cohesive visual identity
